The rules for using this site

A free study aid, provided as it is, built from published word lists under a share-alike licence.

What this isunofficial

Learn Chinese is an unofficial study aid for the HSK vocabulary. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Chinese Testing International, the body that publishes the HSK, and it is not an official preparation product. Nothing on these pages is exam material.

Word counts and datesas published

The syllabus counts cumulatively. HSK 1 is 300 words, HSK 2 is 500, HSK 3 is 1,000, HSK 4 is 2,000, HSK 5 is 3,600, HSK 6 is 5,400, and HSK 7–9 is 11,000.

The syllabus was published in November 2025. The first official sitting in the new format is 13 December 2026, and every sitting from January 2027 uses it. Chinese Testing International can revise the syllabus, and when it does these pages may lag behind the change.

Words, meanings and licenceCC BY-SA 4.0

The word lists come from the syllabus published in November 2025. Traditional forms and English meanings are adapted from CC-CEDICT and published by Second Language under CC BY-SA 4.0. Part-of-speech labels are the syllabus's own.

That licence lets you reuse the word data, including commercially, provided you credit the source and share your version under the same licence. It grants no rights over the HSK itself, or over any mark of Chinese Testing International.

Example sentences, synonyms and opposites are drawn from the open sets listed on the About page and carry their own share-alike terms.

Accuracyno guarantees

Each deck is built directly from the source files and checked on every build. English meanings are dictionary glosses, and a dictionary can pick a different sense than the one your course teaches. Use the site as a supplement and check anything that matters against your own materials. No guarantee is given that the lists are complete, current or sufficient for a particular exam.

Tests and markspractice only

The tests are practice. A mark, a percentage or a "passed" line is this site's own verdict, worked out from the questions you just answered, and it has no standing with Chinese Testing International. Questions are drawn at random from the deck, so two sittings are never the same paper, and a result here does not predict an exam score.

Using the sitefair use

Study with it, print a deck, run it on a class projector. Do not present it as an official HSK product, sell it as one, or strip the attribution to the source from copies you publish.

Liabilityas it is

The site is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind. To the extent the law allows, the person who runs it is not liable for loss arising from its use. Nothing on this page limits a right you hold under the law that applies to you.

Changes and contactdated below

This page can change. The date below records the last revision, and continuing to use the site after a change means the new terms apply. The person who runs the site can be reached through their GitHub profile.
